I think you're worried that if you admit to yourself you want to get along with them and work together, then you're opening yourself up to the possibility that your feelings might get hurt if it doesn't happen. Is that fair to say?
And possibly, if this is the case, you've decided that failure or rejection will hurt less if you're in control of why it happens? I'm just guessing here. You can tell me to shut up.
